Health Alert
Hepatitis A
Hepatitis A is a human virus that primarily infects the liver causing varying degrees of sickness.Symptoms commonly include yellowing of the eyes or skin, tiredness, nausea, vomiting, claycolored stools and fever. In the United States, most people have already been vaccinated against Hepatitis A during childhood. Students who have had two shots to prevent Hepatitis A are protected or immune to the virus. Students who have only had one shot or never had shots to prevent Hepatitis A should consider getting vaccinated to reduce their risk of contracting Hepatitis A.
You can check your shot records for Hepatitis A vaccinations. Your family may have a copy of your shot records. Your health care provider should have a copy of your shot records. If you cannot find your shot records, it would not be dangerous to get another Hepatitis A vaccination.
If you would like to discuss your risk for Hepatitis A or other health concerns, you may call the Student Health Center Nurse Advice line at 459-2591. Before calling please research your vaccination history to see if you have already received both Hepatitis A vaccines. You can make an appointment in our immunization clinic by calling 459-2500. Students with SHIP insurance receive vaccines for free. Students without SHIP are welcome to have immunizations at the Student Health Center but charges will be applied to their student accounts.
