Dignity Ends Contract with Anthem Blue Cross
July 2021
To ensure plan members enrolled in University of California, Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP) have access to affordable, quality in-network care and coverage, Anthem Blue Cross regularly negotiates with its providers. Occasionally, negotiations to find mutually-beneficial terms can be challenging. This is the case with Dignity Health.
Anthem Blue Cross and Dignity Health, which includes Hospitals across the state, expired July 15, 2021. This contract termination affects students and dependents under the UC SHIP. This means that services a UC SHIP member receives at Dignity Health starting on July 16, 2021, will no longer be covered by Anthem at the in-network level.
As of July 16th, 2021, however, Dignity Health Hospitals and Medical Centers are considered out-of-network. Please note that out-of-network benefits will apply as follows:
- Deductible amounts are higher for out-of-network care
- Claims for services received will be processed at the out-of-network coverage tier
- Higher out-of-network co-insurance rates, except for pre-approved transition assistance services, will be the patient's responsibility
- The patient may be responsible for the balance of costs above the allowed amount for care received from out-of-network providers
If a UC SHIP member is currently undergoing a course of treatment or has a current authorization for health care services, they may be eligible for transition assistance to ensure continuity of care. Please direct members to Anthem Blue Cross UC SHIP Customer Service at 866-940-8306 or to www.anthem.com/ca for any questions about continuity of care, benefits or for assistance in finding providers.
